Apocolypse How App
Character Name: Johnny Summer
Age: Mid-late 20s
Canon: Lavender Jack (Webcomic)
Canon point: Season 3, Episode 97, after he’s been alerted that there’s people in the service passages that ought not be there
History: I’m so sorry, there’s no wiki to speak of.
Johnny was raised by a reasonably to very wealthy family, one at least in good enough standing that whether or not he’d be married off to be ‘some idiot’s wife’ was a concern of his. Needless to say, the life his parents had in mind for him was not something he was willing to abide by, and so Johnny set out to remake himself. By his own definition, he’s the epitome of a ‘self-made man’ and very proud of that fact. He left his comfortable life, worked at the Blue horseshoe club, bled and sweat for the building, until he became manager and then, eventually, bought the place out. He then bought the apartments above that and above that. Floor by floor, Johnny Summer bought one of the tallest buildings in Gallery until he owned the whole thing. At the top he built the Margravine club, a mirror to the first floor he’d started out on and the crown jewel of the building as it soon played host to the richest and most powerful in the citystate.
He’d barely seen the club begin to grow and climb in popularity when something darker moved in. The Black Note, a masked terrorist set on sewing fear to shake the rich from their positions, told Johnny he’d hurt his workers and destroy the building he’d worked so hard for if he didn’t cooperate with him. Ashamedly, Johnny agreed, he’d left himself no other support and no options to turn to. The Black Note moved his assistant into some of the apartments in the heart of the building (rent free) and used some of the service passages beneath the building to come and go as he saw fit to sow his terror and destruction. A couple times, Johnny tries to push back and even warn Mimley Bastrop, his new entanglement of feelings, about the Black Note’s presence (without knowing Mimley was also the infamous masked vigilante, Lavender Jack) but the Note did not take kindly to this. More than once, Johnny appears bruised and injured, assumedly from alterations or attempts to resist the villain. However, he isn’t cowed and eventually Bastrop corners Johnny and gets the full story from him.
Mimley eventually defeats the Black Note as Lavender Jack, never once keeping his secret from Johnny after he came clean to Mimley, and the two agree there’s something building between them. However, Johnny can see there’s something unresolved between Mimley and his assistant, Ducky and the two must flee town anyway, so Joihnny encourages him to figue that out and hopes they see each other again. Mimely attempts to invite Johny to come with him, but Johnny refuses and cites he has plenty he must make up for as well there in Gallery.
Two years later, he’s doing exactly that as the war efforts and tensions in the city rise to dangerous levels, the Margrave building is a place of neutrality and sanity for many in the city.
Personality:
☆ Ambitious Above all else, Johnny is ambitious. He identifies what he wants and he goes for it. That’s not to say there aren’t moments of hesitation, but when he figured out he wanted to live his own life instead of the one his parents planned, he set sights on that. When he found the Margrave building, he set his sights on that and worked at the Blue Horseshoe club until he could buy it, then the next floor and the next, on and on for years until he owned the whole building because that was his dream: a place of his own making. One he could make a community out of. When the Black Note threatened that and successfully bent Johnny to his will, Johnny had to re-examine himself and his values. He grew from it instead of balking or sinking into remorse and reached ever higher in the two years Mimely was gone.
☆Nosy Or inquisitive, if you want to be more generous! But Johnny likes to know what’s going on, even if it’s only the latest gossip, he’s always got an ear out for who’s who and what’s going on with those around him. He often engages people in conversation for such things, preferring to hear it directly from the source, but eavesdropping works just as well. His introduction is given as he steps in to interrupt a local politician on his hateful rant of the uselessness of the poor. The handful of panels showing the man have neither hide nor hair of Johnny Summer, yet the confident host slips in at the height of the rant to defuse it and send the man on to more pleasant topics with a smile.
☆ Distant The down side to having your nose pressed into your goals is that it’s left Johnny emotionally distant. Being forced into a form of agoraphobia and paranoia for three years where he couldn't leave his building certainly didn't help. He cares about people and especially those he considered friends, but he has a very reserved way of showing it. He’s not above asking for help when he needs it, but he’s more inclined to keep his nose only shallowly involved in other people’s business unless that business involves his front door or his tenants specifically. He’s shown to have tabs on the business of everyone who enters his club, siting to Mimley that he ‘looks like someone who doesn’t want to be [at the club]’ but doesn’t press when Mimely brushes him off either.
☆ Charming While he might keep his distance from involving himself in other people overly much (or risking them involving themselves in him overly much) it hasn’t harmed Johnny Summer’s ability to charm and schmooze with the best of them. Despite his three years of forced solitude in the Margrave, it never stopped him from making connections with those who came through his doors and making them feel immediately at home. Right at his canonpoint, he’s had a conversation with a military official out to search his premises for certain peoples and he’s clearly very comfortable in his wording and his assumption that he and Johnny are friends enough to sneak past Johnny’s rules, an impression he’s allowed so that he can build rapport and comfort with the soldiers who drink at his club. Yet even while he’s telling the officer he’s a “military stooge” Johnny does it in the most open and welcoming way possible and invites the man to come back to the club for a drink whenever he’d like.
☆ Protective With the aforementioned interaction, the military official arrives with business he’s been ordered to carry out: the search of the Margrave building to find a wayward detective and her sidekick. Yet when he asks, Johnny says no outright. He sites the fact he has a special arrangement with the Lord Mayor to protect his tenants and he will not bow again to leave his people vulnerable. The man even warns the next people to come knocking at Johnny’s door won’t be as kind and Johnny doesn’t even acknowledge it beyond a sideways thank you for ‘looking out’ for him. He got people hurt and in danger once, he has no intention of allowing such strife under his roof again.
Suitability: Johnny is the sort who likes having roots, so even if he’s not a fan of the fact he’s been unearthed from his, he’ll be more inclined to at least partially settle down in the meanwhile. Plus…where do you go when your country doesn’t exist?
Powers/Abilities: There is nothing supernatural about this boy at all. He’s a decent shot with a gun and a cocktail mixer, and he’s shown to have middling skill with a first aid kit, but most of his ability lies in his social skills.
Entity Affinity: Were he aligned to an entity, it would be the Buried. He’s very ambition and work focused, a very nose-to-the-grindstone sort. He was so focused on his goal that he lost all sense of a safety net, personal social sphere, and eventually a chunk of his agency when cornered and threatened into compliance. While this could easily be applied to him as well, he could just as easily put that same pressure on others.
